SELF-CONTAINED CATEGORY I CS-137 IRRADIATORS FOR BIOLOGICAL AND OHER LOW DOSE RESEARCH, Mark I SERIES

Mark I Irradiators irradiate samples on turntables adjacent to a line source of Cs137.  This provides high radiation levels for irradiating cells/tissue cultures in test tubes/culture vessels ≤ 100 mm diameter and lower dose rates to large numbers of  mice/rats in animal chambers on large turntables at a greater distance from the Cs137 source in the same irradiator.

For fractionated doses attenuators to reduce dose rate to full volume samples up to a factor of 100 are available.  For irradiating small sections of animals, such as leg/tail tumors, the Model 335 removable collimator system which provides an adjustable, 1 to 30 mm wide full cavity height field of radiation is available for Models 68 and 68A.  Those parts of the animals not exposed over the slit receive  minimal doses  of radiation.

The table below lists dose rates available for animal chambers located on the turntable position which provides minimum dose variation through the radiation  volume. Cs137 source sizes are those typically used with each Model. Cs137 sources of  greater/smaller Curie levels are available to meet user dose rate requirements.  Dose rates are a linear function of Curie loadings.

*  Model 25.   Sample size is 6” diameter x 8” high, volume 3.7liters.  Dose

     rate with 800 Ci.Cs137 source is ~115 R/minute.  Dose rate to 100 mm

          diameter samples is ~ 300 R/minute.

*  Model 30.   Sample size is 8” diameter x 10” high, volume 8.2 liters. Dose

          Rate with 1,100 Ci. Cs137 source is ~135 R/minute. Dose rate to 100 mm

          diameter samples  is ~370  R/minute.

*  Model 68.   Sample size is 12”diameter x 12” high, volume 22 liters. Dose

         Rate with 1,900 Ci. Cs137 source is ~ 135 R/minute.  Dose rate to 100 mm

         diameter samples is ~500 R/minute.

*  Model 68A.Sample size is 12” diameter x 14” high, volume26 liters. Dose

     rate with 2,200 Ci.Cs137 source is ~ 150 R/minute.  Dose rate to `100 mm
